2015 Annual Event Recap07.07.16

On Friday, September 25 2015, Professionals from all over the Treasure Valley and beyond gathered together for Idaho Guardian and Fiduciary Association’s Annual Event. Once again it was a huge success! Our Annual Event would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors. A special thank you to Advocate Guardianship, LLC, Castle Rock Services, Inc., Client-Focused Fiduciary Services, LLC, Edgewood Spring Creek and Plantation Place, Homewatch CareGivers, Nuclear Care Partners, Seasons Care Management, PLLC, Starlifter Wealth Management, Treasure Valley Hospice, LLC, TrESCo of Idaho, and Willow Park for your support. This year we tackled the topic of Ethics, particularly Bioethics as well as Judicial Code of Ethics, and Ethical Decision Making for complex Guardian and Conservator cases. We had a fantastic line-up of speakers which included our opening speaker, Judge Christopher Bieter, our keynote speaker, Alex Chamberlain, and our panel of experienced professionals, Becky Broadbent, Julie Adams DeFord, Julie Robinson, Christy Walbuck and Charo Webster. Also, we celebrated IGFA’s 10 year Anniversary! What a wonderful accomplishment for our Organization and we can’t wait to see what happens over the course of the next 10 years! Lastly, thank you to our IGFA members and guests who came out for the event; we hope you enjoyed it!

We are pleased to announce that there are 2 new nominees for the Idaho Guardian and Fiduciary Association’s Board of Directors! The Members of IGFA will be taking an official vote at our next monthly assembly meeting in November. If you would like to participate in the official vote, you must become a member to do so. Below is a brief bio from both candidates.

Pam Hickman

Pam Hickman is Partner and Co-Founder of ElderCare of Idaho, a geriatric care management company. ElderCare of Idaho guides seniors and families through the complexities of eldercare including healthcare management, family education, long-distance caregiving, advance planning, guardianships, placement, in-home solutions, Medicare and Medicaid.
Pam has over 20 years of experience in corporate finance and accounting. Her transition to eldercare consulting was inspired by her 18 year experience as caregiver for her mother. She now enjoys combining her work and personal caregiving experiences in developing personalized solutions for seniors and their families. Pam is certified in the Alzheimer’s Association Approved Dementia Advanced Care Training Program and John Hopkins: Living with Dementia: Impact on Individuals, Caregivers, Communities and Societies. She is Chair of the Justice Alliance for Vulnerable Adults Policy Committee and a member of the Idaho Guardian and Fiduciary Association. Pam is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Master of Business Administration from UCLA Anderson School of Management. She grew up in Nampa and now resides in Boise with Anthony, her husband and business partner.

Kimberly Ouwehand

Kimberly Ouwehand is the Community Outreach Coordinator for Treasure Valley Hospice. She attended Seattle Pacific University and NNU. She has a passion to help both individuals and businesses to understand the healthcare resources available to them by defining what they need and where to find the answers. She has a love for hospice, because it allows a team of experts to surround the whole family and support them through a journey which can help them live life and finish well. Kimberly is actively involved with the Meridian Chamber, Love INC, JAVA and IGFA. She is currently a board member with Friends in Action. Kimberly is married and has two boys ages 18 and 15.

New IGFA Treasurer03.31.15

If you’re a member of IGFA you are well aware that we have welcomed a new treasurer to our Organization. Below is a little bit about our treasurer, Sarah Low.

Sarah Low

Sarah Low is the Branch Manager at AtHome Care. She is currently working on her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Sarah has worked in healthcare since she was 17 and has always had a passion for helping others. Sarah took the CNA class when she was 17 and started working in a long term care facility. After doing that for about 6 months she was asked to train as a restorative therapy aid. She jumped at the opportunity! She worked with traumatic brain injury, Advanced Alzheimer’s and stroke patients to create and implement a plan for speech, occupational and physical therapy. Sarah worked with them on strength and muscle training as well as swallowing difficulties. She did this for 2 years and then took a position working with developmentally disabled individuals. Sarah worked with a behavioral specialist writing plans for positive behavioral reinforcement. She spent many years volunteering at the Salvation Army as well as working with Child Protective Services. She grew up in Spokane Washington and in 2013 was offered a promotion with AtHome Care that required her to relocate to the Treasure Valley. Since being in the Treasure Valley Sarah has enjoyed outdoor activities with her husband and 3 children.

We are pleased to announce that there are 4 new nominees for the Idaho Guardian and Fiduciary Association’s Board of Directors! Below is a brief bio from each candidate.

Robin A. Cook, CPA
Robin Cook is the sole owner of Personal Accounting Solutions, LLC – a practice that focuses on conservatorships and fiduciary accounting. In the course of her career, she has been a certified public accountant for more than 25 years, primarily focused in international accounting. While this career path offered many opportunities to travel to numerous other countries and experience their cultures and enjoy new cuisines, personal family experiences opened the door to new challenges and she is now focused on working with individuals and their families. It has been an amazing journey of meeting positive caring people throughout the eldercare and healthcare industries and the realization that you make a difference in someone’s life every day is so rewarding.

Robin is a native Idahoan and attended schools in Boise, graduating from Boise State University. She has very strong ties to the community and has been very active over the years volunteering with organizations such as The Idaho FoodBank, Drug-Free Idaho, ZooBoise, Friends in Action, Paint the Town, Rake-Up Boise, Friends of the Library, and the Boise Senior Center, and others. She was a member and treasurer of the Beaux Arts Societe, worked with AARP volunteer income tax assistance, is very involved with JAVA (Justice Alliance for Vulnerable Adults), the Idaho Guardianship and Fiduciary Association, is treasurer for HAPPEN, and serves on the board and is treasurer for the Friendship Clinic, which offers free healthcare for non or under-insured lower income families.

Robin and her husband, Miles, enjoy white-water rafting, camping, golfing, and traveling when they can get away. Their family consists of 2 golden retrievers (quite spoiled!) and many nieces and nephews that enrich their lives.

Eric Hawk
Eric Hawk was raised in the North Idaho town of Harrison, graduate of Kootenai High School class of ’87, attended North Idaho College through a music scholarship and briefly performed with the North Idaho Symphony.  Seasoned Sales & Marketing Manager for Computer Manufacturing, Hardware, Lawn & Tree Care & Healthcare Industries.  Received Certificate of Completion from Game Face Academy in Portland, OR for Sports Sales & Marketing and worked for Spokane Chiefs & Idaho Steelheads Hockey Teams.  Owns & operates Music Production & Entertainment company under Hawk Rock Entertainment where he utilizes his songwriting, DJ & Emcee skills for local business promotions.  Worked for Family Home Health and Hospice in 2014 and currently works for Addus Health Care as care taker for clients in Idaho City.

Lincoln Strawhun
Lincoln Strawhun (pronounced “stron”) is an attorney with Susan Lynn Mimura & Associates PLLC, a general practice firm in Meridian, ID. Before that, and before he relocated to Idaho in the summer of 2013, he worked as an attorney at the elder law firm of the Law Offices of Carol Bertsch in San Antonio, TX. In San Antonio, he was a frequent speaker at senior centers, caregiver conferences and for organizations such as the Funeral Consumer’s Alliance. Lincoln primarily practices estate planning, guardianships, probate and Medicaid. He was inspired to focus this part of his legal career after personally experiencing issues with his two grandmothers and father. His grandmother passed away after a seven year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. His living grandmother is now in a nursing home—after first struggling to live on her own with the help of care providers and then in an assisted living facility for eight years. His father passed away in 2012 after spending two years in a VA facility. Lincoln writes a monthly column for the Idaho Senior News that explains legal issues affecting seniors and their families.  Additionally, he is a reservist in the US Navy. He is married to Beatriz, his wife of ten years. Together they have three daughters, a pet beagle, and a Siamese kitty and live in the Boise Bench area.

James R. Stoll. J.D
James Stoll is a partner at the law firm of Arkoosh Law OfficesHis practice focuses on high conflict litigation. James is originally from Akron, Ohio, but has spent most of his life in Idaho.  Mr. Stoll graduated from Eagle High School in 1997.  Thereafter, Mr. Stoll attended and graduated from the University of Idaho in 2001, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science.  In 2005, Mr. Stoll graduated from Cleveland State University, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, earning a Juris Doctorate.  James’ history of community involvement includes being a consistent volunteer with the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program Clinics, participation as a Deputy Commissioner on the Idaho State Athletic Commission, and most recently as an Ambassador for the Boise Chamber of Commerce. James lives in Boise with his two boxers, and enjoys fly fishing, snowboarding, and hiking the local trails.

A Letter from the President07.18.14


IGFA Members, 

I write this letter to the IGFA membership with a passion for the work of IGFA, our field and the people we serve. I have a long history with IGFA serving as a cofounder in 2005, serving as President in 2007 and again serving as President this year. Enough about me – I have a lot of the exciting things to share about IGFA!


I’ve been thrilled with the speakers we’ve had at our monthly meetings! If you haven’t made a meeting you are missing out!  Our speakers have provided a great depth of insight into the various aspects of our field.  I also appreciate staying in contact with others in our field – it is vital to your business. With your paid membership you can attend these enriching meetings on the third Wednesday of every month from 12-1:15 at Silverstone Amenity Center conveniently off the freeway at Eagle and Overland.


Your paid membership will also give you a discount for our Annual Event this fall. We have a great line-up of speakers and topics this year. The committee for the event has been meeting weekly to make this a great day of education, policy development and relationship building for our field. One last thing – I am so excited that IGFA has hired a new Administrator Coordinator. Anitra Sweet is making a huge difference for IGFA!  One task she has accomplished is work on the IGFA website. Because of her regular updates to our website we are now on the first page of search engines. People are finding us on-line and I have been able to make referrals back to our membership. Make sure your company is linked with IGFA by paying your membership dues. Also, refer to the IGFA website regularly to stay up to date with local, relevant events.
